EC, OTIF, ERA, DB Cargo, IBM and Trainline to debate cross-border rail in Frankfurt

Press Release   •   Nov 22, 2018 08:00 GMT

Policy-makers, technical innovators, and major operators will debate how digital will remove blocks to cross-border rail transport at the 7th International Railway Summit in Frankfurt on 21 February 2019. This wide-ranging session, entitled ‘Power in the customer’s hands: How can digital remove barriers to cross-border travel?’, will address the demands of moving passengers and goods in an increasingly globalised society. The summit takes place from 20 to 22 February 2019 and is supported by the International Union of Railways (UIC).

Keynote presentations will be made by leading figures in organisations defined by cross-border collaboration: Elisabeth Werner, Director of Land Transport, Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), European Commission (EC), and Bas Leermakers, Interim Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF).

DG MOVE develops the European Union’s transport policies and manages and finances technological projects towards those ends, whilst OTIF brings 50 member states from Europe and Asia under its purview to agree standards, laws, and contracts facilitating smoother international carriage.

In addition to further interventions from Ms Werner and Mr Leermakers, the subsequent panel discussion will include expert insight from Josef Doppelbauer, Executive Director, EU Agency for Railways (ERA), the body responsible for setting mandatory technical specifications for the Trans-European Rail System and Dee Waddell, Global Managing Director, Travel & Transportation, IBM, whose AI and Watson Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are enhancing operational efficiency, as well as Roland Bosch, CEO of pan-European freight carrier DB Cargo and Clare Gilmartin, CEO of Trainline, Europe’s foremost independent provider of travel information, journey planning, and tickets.

Organisations and individuals interested in learning more about the agenda for the International Railway Summit and about how they can participate in the event can visit www.irits.org or contact the organisers, IRITS Events.

International Railway Summit is a meeting of senior executives representing the world’s key rail operators, rail infrastructure management companies, national and local governments, rolling stock manufacturers and a wide range of solution providers.

International Railway Summit provides a 'matchmaking' service between rail industry leaders ('buyers') and technical experts, based on buyer delegates' project requirements and the proven expertise of large and small suppliers that we have carefully handpicked. Based on this matchmaking, buyer delegates attend one-to-one consultation sessions with suitable suppliers during the annual summit.

In addition to the one-to-one meetings, delegates also attend a conference programme given by key industry leaders and experts and network over lunches and dinners with their counterparts and industry colleagues from all over the world. International Railway Summit is hosted by IRITS Events. The 7th International Railway Summit will take place on 20-22 February 2019 in Frankfurt, Germany. The 8th International Railway Summit will take place on 20-22 November 2019 in New Delhi, the first time the event will have been hosted in India.
